Rehabilitation

Waste rock doesn't leave the value chain.

Tailings and waste from mining and processing are rehabilitated into raw material for construction — closing the loop on-site instead of leaving it in a dump. Nothing leaves the site unaccounted for.

Why rehabilitation matters

Traditional mining operations leave behind waste rock and tailings that become environmental liabilities. Chromax takes a different approach: we process waste into useful products that generate additional revenue and reduce our environmental footprint.

From waste to product

Our rehabilitation process turns mining by-products into three distinct construction materials, each with its own market and application.

Bricks

Waste material is processed into brick stock for local construction supply. The bricks meet local building standards and are sold to builders and construction companies in our operating areas.

  • Meets SANS building standards
  • Local construction market supply

Cement

Rehabilitated waste rock feeds into cement production, giving low-grade rock a second use. The processed material is supplied to cement manufacturers as a raw material input.

  • Raw material input for cement kilns
  • Supports local cement manufacturers

Roads

Crushed waste rock is used as base material in road construction around our operating areas. This creates a practical use for coarse waste and supports local infrastructure development.

  • G4 and G5 base course material
  • Used in local road construction projects

Environmental commitment

Rehabilitation is not an afterthought at Chromax — it's part of how we design and run our operations from the start. Every tonne of waste is accounted for and directed to a productive use.

No dump, no stockpile

Unlike many mining operations that accumulate waste in dumps or stockpiles, we process our waste into saleable products as it is generated. This means no long-term environmental liability from un-rehabilitated waste.

Land left productive

After the ore is extracted, the land doesn't sit idle. Through our secondary production streams, the land continues to contribute to the local economy — whether through construction materials or infrastructure support.

Rehabilitation as a business model

For Chromax, rehabilitation isn't a cost centre — it's a revenue stream. By turning waste into products, we reduce costs, create additional income and build stronger relationships with the communities we operate in.
